Somnath, the meaning of which translates to 'lord of the moon', is an important pilgrimage town in Gujarat. The temple town, that is steeped in stories of mythology, is home to the famous Somnath Temple, the first of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India. It is also the place where Lord Krishna is said to have breathed his last. There are beaches, museums and many other tourist attractions in Somnath. It has several industries and is home to one of the biggest fishing ports in the country.

Somnath Temple

The Somnath Temple is the first Jyotirlinga amongst 12 Jyotirlingas situated in India. It is located near the confluence of three rivers - Kapila, Hiran and the mythical Sarasvati, together known as Triveni Sangam. Built before 649 CE, the temple is known to have stood the test of time despite several destructions and natural calamities.

Bhalka Tirth

Bhalka Tirth is a holy site of the Hindus. It is said that at the site of this temple, Lord Krishna was struck with an arrow by a hunter named Jara, after which he left the earth for the heavenly abode. Dehotsarg Tirth, located in its vicinity, is believed to be the place where Lord Krishna breathed his last.
