Pune, the 2nd largest city in the state of Maharashtra is also known as the cultural capital of the state. Originally known as Punawadi, Pune is known for its educational institutions. Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum which is located off Bajirao Road is famous for its collection of 21,000 artifacts that depict the Indian culture. The museum showcases collection of earthen wear pots, traditional lamps, artistically decorated doors and windows and many more.

Mahatma Phule Museum is situated in the heart of the city. Established in the year 1875, this museum displays brassware items, stone carvings, artifacts, handicrafts, agriculture and forestry. Parvati Hill temple, a sacred place for Hindus is believed to be built in 17th century. It houses idols of Lord Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Vishnu. This temple which stands on the hill top offers a panoramic view of the city. Shaniwar Wada was built by the then King Bajirao in the year 1730. In the year 1837, this palace was destroyed by the massive fire. But a 21 feet door of the palace remains intact and offers a beautiful site to the tourists.

Vishrambaug, a well known destination in Pune was built in a year 1811. This beautifully carved structure is known for its entrance and the finely carved balcony. Sinhagad Fort, located to the south-west of Pune was originally named as ‘Kondana’. Khadakwasala, famous for its dam is situated about 20kms from the city of Pune. The National Defence Academy, Central Water & Power Research Station are placed in the vicinity of the dam. Osho Meditation Resort spread over 28-acre land offers peace and tranquility to many visitors and it is the best place to meditate.

By Air

Pune International Airport situated at Lohegaon is operated by the Airports Authority of India. It shares its runways with the neighboring Indian Air Force base. In addition to domestic flights to all major Indian cities, this airport serves international direct flights to Dubai (operated by Air India Express) and to Frankfurt (operated by Lufthansa). Jet Airways, Kingfisher Airlines, Indian Airlines, Indigo, Spice Jet and Jet Lite have regular flights connecting Pune to major cities in India.

By Rail

Local trains (EMUs) connect Pune to the industrial town of Pimpri-Chinchwad and the hill station of Lonavala, while daily express trains like Deccan Queen, Deccan Express, Shatabdi Express, Pune - Nizammudin Duronto connect Pune to Mumbai, Howrah, Delhi, Jammutawi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Goa, Varanasi, and Jamshedpur from the Pune Railway Station.

By Road

Public buses within the city and its suburbs are operated by the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML). The PMPML operates the Pune Bus Rapid Transit system, the first of its kind in India, in which dedicated bus lanes allow buses to travel quickly through the city. Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation runs buses from its main stations in Shivajinagar, Pune station and Swargate to all major cities and towns in Maharashtra and neighbouring states. Private companies too run buses to major cities throughout India.

Pune is well-connected to other cities by Indian highways and state highways. National Highway 4 (NH 4) connects it to Mumbai, Bangalore, Sangli and Kolhapur. NH 9 to Solapur and Hyderabad, and NH 50 to Nashik. State highways connect it to Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, and Alandi.
