Elephanta - 10 km across Mumbai harbour is a small island called Elephanta or Gharapuri. It contains a fine cluster of 6th-8th century rock cut caves. They were carved during the Golden Age of the Gupta dynasty, inspired by the worship of Lord Shiva. The sculptures are exquisitely carved and the most outstanding of these is the Maheshmurthy or Trimurthi (Triple Face) a 4-5 metre high three headed bust hewn from a single rock, representing the triple aspects of Shiva, that is the Creator, the Preserver and the Destroyer.
