Mumbai – this beautiful
harbour, earlier known as Bombay, is studded with hilly islands and
a palm-fringed shore rising gradually to the peaks of the mountain
ranges, from the waterfront, the “Gateway of India”. Besides
being the major port of India, Mumbai is the commercial capital and
one of the biggest industrial centers of India. A cosmopolitan city,
it owes its prosperity to the industry and enterprise of its
population of about ten million.
Once a cluster of seven
islands—Colaba Mumbai, Mazagaon, Old Woman‘s island, Wadala, Mahim,
Parel, and Matunga Sion— and the home of the Koli fishing community,
it is today the financial capital of India. The islands were ruled
by a succession of Hindu dynasties, invaded by Muslims in the 14th
century, and then ceded to Portugal by the sultan of Gujarat in
1534. In 1662, these islands were given to the English King Charles
the Second, as a part of the wedding dowry for the Portuguese
princess, Catherine of Braganza. In 1668, Bombay was given to the
East India Company.
Hotel Marine Plaza overlooks the
Arabian Sea and is in the heart of the city’s business district.
Here we pride ourselves in being fashionably small in size; and
delightfully big in services and facilities. Hotel Marine Plaza
offers all the 5 Star facilities at value prices, and has made
hospitality more accessible than exclusive.

Interest :
The Gateway of India
Major
sights in the city are the Gateway of India, the 262 feet high
gateway overlooking the sea, built to commemorate the visit of King
George V and Queen Mary in 1911.
The other places of interest
are Dhobi Ghat, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Rajabai Clock

and the Prince of Wales Museum.
Elephanta - 10 km
across Mumbai harbour is a small island called Elephanta or
Gharapuri. It contains a fine cluster of 6th-8th century rock cut
caves. They were carved during the Golden Age of the Gupta dynasty,
inspired by the worship of Lord Shiva. The sculptures are
exquisitely carved and the most outstanding of these is the
Maheshmurthy or Trimurthi (Triple Face) a 4-5 metre high three
headed bust hewn from a single rock, representing the triple aspects
of Shiva, viz the Creator, the Preserver and the
Destroyer.
