Agra has one of the finest Mughal fortifications in India, the Agra Fort. A gigantic red sandstone structure situated on the banks of the Yamuna River, Akbar started constructing this marvel in 1565, further additions to the fort were made by his grandson, Shah Jahan. Initially worked for military purposes, it was later utilized as a royal residence, and in the long run even filled in as a jail where Shah Jahan was restricted for a long time by his child Aurangzeb, who seized control in 1658.
