Chennai Local Information:
Chennai, formerly known as Madras, is the capital of one of the most beautiful states of southern India - Tamil Nadu and a gateway to the sunny south. This fourth largest metro in India is 350 years old and is widely spread over 80 sq. km. It is a seaport and one of the biggest centers of trade and communications well linked by road, rail and air to all the important cities within India. Compared to the other major metros of India, it is far less congested and polluted. Chennai, is a journey into timeless India, a kaleidoscope of moods rich in the treasures of history, from temples and shrines to forts and palaces, the landscape of the past lives easily with the present. The city grew up around the English settlement of Fort Saint George and gradually absorbed the surrounding towns and villages. Despite the strong British influence, Chennai retained its traditional Tamil Hindu culture and having effectively merged it with the foreign influence, forms a perfect blend. Chennai continues to retain much of its traditional charm and provides many a fascinating vignette of southern heritage and culture. It has withstood the pressure of modernization to some extend and even today retains an old world charm which is instantly appealing to the visitor. Among the principal sights are the Fort St. George, the Marina Beach, the Snake Park at Guindy and the National Art Gallery & Museum.
